Homicide detectives are investigating after a 45-year-old Cranbourne North man was fatally stabbed while fishing.
A 36-year-old man has been arrested after the 45-year-old was found dead on Frankston Pier, a popular swimming and fishing spot in south-east Melbourne.
Police rushed to Frankston Pier off the promenade at around 6am today after receiving reports that a man had been assaulted.
They arrived to find the 45-year-old injured and unresponsive on the pier. He died on the spot.
The 36-year-old man found near the scene is currently being questioned by police as the area has been cordoned off and a crime scene has been established.
It became clear that the arrested man has no permanent address.
Windy conditions were observed at the pier, which was causing waves, with police fearing the crime scene could be contaminated.
Homicide detectives are investigating and are not looking for anyone else in connection with the man’s death.
“It is also believed that the parties involved were not known to each other,” police said.
Large stretches of Frankston’s coastline remain cut off from the public.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
