Desperate search underway for hiker Alistair Thompson, missing from Larapinta Trail in Northern Territory

A desperate search has begun for a hiker reported missing on one of the country’s most popular and beautiful walks.
Alistair Thompson walked the Larapinta Trail in Northern Territorywhich stretches 223 km from Alice Springs to Mount Saunder.
The 63-year-old reportedly started the hike alone more than two weeks ago on May 13, walking east on the trail to Alice Springs.

“A search operation has been underway on the Larapinta Trail since 9am this morning with Police Search and Rescue vehicle and foot teams, along with a helicopter,” NT Police said.
Alistair was last heard from on Tuesday 21 May when he texted a friend that he planned to be in Hugh Gorge by Wednesday 22 May.
Police said he is expected to have made contact by now and also failed to check into his hotel.
Alistair is said to be an experienced hiker with plenty of food and water and is described as 6ft (183cm) tall, thin, fair skinned, with light brown/grey hair and wearing a blue brimmed hat.
Anyone with information or who has seen Alistair is asked to contact police.
